Child Birthing - It's in our hands for generations to come
By: Mara Dower
When it comes to making a decision about child birthing, are you going to follow the sheep and do as they have done, or as you are told; or are you going to do some research, empower yourself and do what feels right for you and your baby?
The majority of women in Western society believe that the hospital is the safest place to birth. But is it really? I challenge you to look at your beliefs around birthing in a hospital. Perhaps you believe what others have told you, or you have witnessed/experienced successful births, and feel that the hospital is safe with the doctors, nurses, midwives, technical and medical equipment by your side. But do you still believe it's safe when there's unnecessary intervention involved, medicated pain relief and 32% of c-sections - are you looking into the ramifications of these procedures, especially for you and your child later on in life? Wouldn't you want to find another way that's healthier for you and your baby?
Seventy-six percent of women in hospital are having epidurals so we're building up a generation of babies and children drug-induced. What kind of future are we building for ourselves?
It's time for change, time to look and do things differently. It's time to think about what we're doing to our babies, generations, future and ourselves. Women are giving their power away to a lot of male obstetricians and doctors who aren't fully aware of - as Sarah Buckley puts it - the "hormonal orchestration of birthing". Yes, they did their study at school and understand the mechanics of the female body and birthing procedures; however there is so much more to the orchestration of birthing that science hasn't fully worked out yet. And this is where problems start to arise.
Now I'm not saying don't birth in a hospital, wherever you choose to birth is up to you and perfect for you and your baby. But what I am suggesting is, ask yourself/obstetrician/doctor some of these questions: "Do I really need that medicated pain relief? Is there another way without intervention? If I was given a few more hours, could I birth naturally? If I had my own hired midwife or doula would that increase my chances of a healthier, natural birth? If I was fully prepared with diet, exercise, natural therapies, etc, would that make a difference in my birthing outcome? What do I have to do to increase the possibility of a healthy, drug-free baby?" By putting these questions into your space, then many different and interesting answers and possibilities will evolve. These types of questions will bring about change and different outcomes, to that if you had just followed what you were told.
Research before your birth, listen to what your baby and body wants then go with it. If it is something out of the norm you may feel challenged by family and friends, but at the end of the day it's your decision. Take that full responsibility and do what feels right to you. Change is a part of life, and to rebuild a healthier generation of families and children, women need to take a standpoint and be in control of their births. There are many support groups and women who have birthed naturally that will assist your birthing journey whatever you choose. Just seek, communicate and you shall find. Lets build a healthy, drug-free generation of babies.
