Plan Your Perfect Baby Shower In Ten Steps, Part One

Plan Your Perfect Baby Shower In Ten Steps, Part One

By: Michael Kabel

Wondering how to plan the perfect baby shower?

The truth is that baby showers don't take as much planning or baby shower idea brainstorming as many people expect. There's lots of details to get right, to be honest, just as if you were planning any other formal or even informal event.

But taking things one step at a time is a great way to keep on top of all those details, while allowing you time to enjoy your life as well.

10. Choose a hostess.

The hostess should be someone trustworthy enough with all the details. According to most rules of baby shower etiquette, the baby shower planning should be handled by someone outside the immediate family. This prevents the appearance that the family is trying to get free baby supplies by inviting friends and relatives to buy them gifts.

There's no reason the baby shower can't have a host, either. For that matter, showers can also be co-ed if the mother to be has no objections.

9. Time your event right.

The timing presents a critical challenge to a successful baby shower. Traditionally, the shower takes place in the third trimester of pregnancy, but it's also okay to wait until after the child is born.

Try to stage the baby shower on the weekend, as a Saturday luncheon or dinner. You'll want to accommodate as many of your guests' schedules as you can. The mother to be will also have many other things to take care of, as well.

8. Get the right space for the baby shower.

With your date set, you can start looking for a place. Depending on the level of formality you and the mother to be choose, you can hold the event at a restaurant, bistro, café, or even in the comfort of your own home.

Remember to keep the decorations in sync with the venue you choose, and to complement the décor with the right baby shower favors and games. The more you coordinate, the more prevalent your motif will become.

7. Even the food and drinks should fit the baby shower idea.

The menu served at the baby shower doesn't have to be elaborate and it doesn't have to be gourmet cuisine, but remember to take care of your guests. If you hold the event in midday, simply serving a light lunch or appetizers is sufficient. An evening event requires a fuller meal.

6. Use baby shower favors to keep the theme foremost in the guests' minds.

Baby shower favors can also complement your food and drinks. For example, giving guests a kitchen timer is both a useful gift but also symbolizes the anticipation that's such a part of the baby shower celebration. The favor will remind the guests of the shower's good time long after they've returned home.

More steps, baby shower ideas and planning tips can be found in part two of this article.

    Exercise: Exercise and Pregnancy

    Exercise: Exercise and Pregnancy

    By: Nicholas Tan

Prescribing a medication for pregnant women is a complex process.

Before obstetricians and gynecologists decide which dose of which drug can best treat a condition without putting any harmful side effects on the mother and the baby, they consider the patient’s age, general health, the number of months before delivery, tolerance for medications, and any other drugs the pregnant patient may be taking.

Prescribing exercise on pregnant women has to be just as scientific and precise. The type, intensity, frequency, and duration of a "dose" of exercise are all critical. One person’s healthy, vigorous workout could be hazardous to another. These dangers may be greater in pregnant women because they are more likely to have strains and other serious side effects for the would-be mother.

However, if exercise will be implemented and carried out in a normal, average range, exercise will not have an effect on the overall condition of the pregnancy and especially on labor or delivery.

    Pregnancy

Quality prenatal care should be given to a mother during her pregnancy. She should be prepared for the normal delivery of a healthy baby. Complications should be prevented at all costs.

All of these things are boiled down to the fact that a pregnant woman should be cared in such a way that she will not be compelled to do vigorous work but should not also stay in bed and be inactive until she gives birth to her baby.

Consequently, a pregnant woman’s condition varies in relation to the growth and development of the baby in side her womb. Therefore, it is necessary that proper health guidance be provided by her physician during her visit.

Moreover, it is important to keep the pregnant woman’s life active in order to promote good health, not only for her but also for the baby most importantly.

Physical conditions like blood pressure, weight and health status is usually monitored during the pregnant woman’s visit to her doctor. For this reason, it is significant to note that exercise can be the number one factor in order to keep these aspects in good condition.

As the health experts contend, adequate physical and emotional information is needed by a pregnant woman to prepare herself for delivery. She needs practical health messages in keeping herself and the baby healthy.

Hence, for mothers or would-be mothers who are not yet aware why they should exert some effort in engaging into moderate, normal exercise, here is a list of some of its benefits so that you will be able to understand the reason why pregnant women have to exercise regularly:

    1. Defiance against fatigue

As muscle becomes fatigued, it produces less force. To accomplish a task like climbing the stairs, for example, or shoveling snow, more units of muscle must be called into play to back up the wearied muscles.

The tired muscles are both less efficient and less effective. Hence, this will just put more strain on the pregnant woman because of the weight that is continuously adding up each day. That is why tired muscles will usually result to leg cramps or sore muscles.

What every pregnant woman must know is that exercise improves the condition of the muscles and their ability to work longer without fatigue.

    2. Reduce backaches

Even when you sit or stand, some muscles are working, and such relatively easy postures can tax some muscles and cause fatigue. The muscles of the lower back, for example, can be exhausted and worn out by the effort of keeping erect when a pregnant woman stand still for several hours.

With exercise, a pregnant woman can correct this error by developing her posture.

    3. Increase the amount of oxygen

Work and exercise rely on glycogen, a substance produced by the body from complex carbohydrates and stored muscles and liver. The supply of glycogen in the muscles determines and limits the duration of activity. Exercise depletes the glycogen in the muscles and leads to tiredness.

However, when glycogen is depleted by strenuous activity, it is replaced in quantities greater than before, as if the body recognized the need to lay in a larger supply of fuel.

Hence, oxidation is essential for converting glycogen to the energy that pregnant women need to wiggle a finger, flex a muscle, or practice the lungs and heart for some blowing action during normal delivery.

These are just some of the many benefits exercise can bring to pregnant women. Besides, nothing is completely wrong for a pregnant woman doing some moderate exercises. The only important thing to remember is that before starting an exercise program, whether pregnant or not, it is best to consult your doctor. As they say, doctors know best!

Yoga For Pregnant Women - Soothe Your Body And Mind

Yoga For Pregnant Women - Soothe Your Body And Mind

    By: Ron King

Sometimes it is challenging to exercise while pregnant. Yoga for pregnant women offers moms-to-be a great workout that is healthy for you and your unborn baby. Here is a guide on safe, basic yoga exercises and stretches to use during pregnancy.

Prenatal yoga provides both mental and physical benefits during pregnancy. Firstly, it is beneficial because it teaches you how to use breathing to relax your body and mind, factors which will certainly come in handy during childbirth. Learning how to master the postures presented in prenatal yoga will prepare you for labor and childbirth and it does this by instructing your body to stay tranquil.

Yet the benefits of yoga for pregnant women are not only determined by your physical stamina, as the entire principle of yoga is to use not just the body, but the mind and the spirit also. Not only that, but simply working out in a positive and nurturing environment with others who are in the same situation as you can help to give you an emotional pick-me-up right when you require it most.

There are many yoga poses in particular that are designed for use while pregnant, such as the Cobbler or Tailor pose. This is a sitting pose that helps to open up the pelvis. To do this pose, you sit yourself up straight against a wall with the soles of your feet touching each other, and then gently press your knees down and away from one another. Then just stay in this posture for as long as you feel relaxed.

Another helpful prenatal yoga position is the pelvic tilt, which is a posture that helps to relieve back pain. Get down on your hands and knees with your arms shoulder-width apart and your knees hip-width apart. Attempt to keep your arms straight; then tighten in your abdominal muscles and tuck your buttocks under and round your back, breathing in while you hold the position.

Now, relax your back into its relaxed position, and breathe out, repeating as you feel comfortable.

Finally, another important pose is the squatting position, which helps to open up the pelvis and to strengthen the upper legs. As you start to put on weight during pregnancy there are certain support props that you can use to facilitate this position, such as yoga blocks or a pile of books.

Commence by standing facing the back of a chair with your feet spread slightly apart, with your toes pointed outward.Lower your tailbone towards the floor as though you were about to sit down on a chair, but rather than sitting you hold the position there. Take a deep breath in, and when you exhale, push your legs up and bring yourself to a standing position, and then repeat as you feel comfortable.

So if you are wondering how you will possibly exercise while pregnant, consider trying yoga for pregnant women. Not only will you feel great, you'll be accumulating lifelong benefits for you and your child. This natural exercise program will reduce tension and enhance your flexibility. Yoga poses are a wonderful way to ensure your sense of health and well-being, and a practice that you can always manage to adapt into a mother's busy schedule.

What Causes A Woman To Get Pregnant?

What Causes A Woman To Get Pregnant?

    By: Eugene Williams

There are thousands of couples asking how to get pregnant because they have been trying for an extended period of time with no success.

How Does A Woman Become Pregnant?

In most cases a woman becomes pregnant after having sexual intercourse. Sexual intercourse is when a man puts his erect penis inside a woman's vagina. When the penis moves in and out of the vagina, this causes friction between the two of them. As a result of this friction the penis releases a sticky white substance called semen. The ejaculate or sperm contains millions of tiny sperm. The sperm cells travel up the woman's vagina cavity into the uterus and then into her fallopian tubes. At the fallopian tubes the sperm may join with the tiny egg that the woman releases every month. If this joining of the sperm and egg occur then this is called fertilization or conception, this is how to get pregnant the old fashioned way.

Is It Possible To Have A Safe Time To Have Sexual Intercourse?

An integral part of how to get pregnant is knowing if there's a window of time when conception occurs. Pregnancy can occur in the few days following ovulation (the releasing of eggs). Conception takes place in the middle of a woman's menstrual cycle. It's hard to pin point for the most woman when they are ovulating. Moreover, sperm can survive for several days waiting for the egg which takes a few days to travel to the uterus. As a result, a woman can potentially become pregnant over the span of several days. Next, this may be the reason why unprotected sex during a woman's period can still lead to pregnancy. Because a woman in most cases cannot pin point when ovulation takes place, there is no guaranteed safe time to have unprotected sex with someone.

What Is The Best Way To Get Pregnant?

In writing an article about how to get pregnant, it's important to discuss different ways to become pregnant. To increase your chances of becoming pregnant it would be a good plan to have sex on a regular basis around the time of ovulation. For example, a woman with 28 day menstrual cycle this will be around 14 days after the start of their last period even though it can vary from woman to woman. Some doctors in various countries offer ovulation-testing kits.

    Depression Can Occur Following Pregnancy

    Depression Can Occur Following Pregnancy

    By: Zinn Jeremiah

Though most people may be relatively familiar with what depression is, most people are unlikely unaware of how significant of a problem depression is. In the United States alone, statistics indicate one of every five people is depressed. When that percentage is expanded, the result is millions and millions of depressed people. In itself that's a cause for alarm, but what may be even more of a concern is that most depressed people in the US never get treatment. That equates to lots of pain, and lots of productivity lost.

During considerations of dealing with depression, it makes sense to consider whether certain segments of society are more prone to depression than others. It was long believed that women were most prone to depression, but in recent times this thinking has been reconsidered. The fact of the matter is, not only do men get depression but men are more likely to commit suicide because of depression than women are. Looking at depression as purely a gender issue then is not only inaccurate but may also lead to dire consequences in outreach efforts.

It's important then to be clear that men can and do get depressed, and that treatment for depressed men is available. The truth of the matter is however that women most often report feelings of depression, and that women who've recently given birth may be particularly prone to depressed feelings. Depression in women after childbirth is common enough that it has its own terminology: depression following childbirth is typically known as postpartum depression, but can be referred to as perinatal depression as well.

Postpartum depression is not a particularly complicated condition: it's a case of depression in a woman who's recently given birth. The uncertainty with postpartum depression is why it occurs in the first place. Carrying a child over the course of nine months is a terrific responsibility, and that responsibility in itself can lead to stress and feelings of depression. A woman who feels a lack of support following childbirth can also understandably become depressed. There's some thinking that postpartum depression may be related to hormonal balance: a woman's hormonal makeup changes greatly between the time a woman is pregnant, and twenty-four hours after a woman's given birth. What would be surprising is if this swing in hormone balance didn't have any effect on mood at all.

While it's certainly true that not every woman who gives birth becomes depressed afterward, it happens often enough that it's something to be aware of. The positive with respect to postpartum depression is that it usually clears without intervention; and in the event it doesn't clear without intervention, effective treatments are there to be had.

Assisted conception in Greece and Europe

Assisted conception in Greece and Europe

    By: Muhammad Aslam

Tests and treatments are available for both male and female fertility problems. Both partners will need to be tested and it's usually best if you attend appointments together - but follow the advice of your specialist.

Initial tests of your fertility can be started by your GP, who can give support and lifestyle advice.

It's best to have treatment for fertility problems under the care of a specialist team. This team will include a doctor - usually a specialist in women's health (obstetrics and gynaecology), and a counsellor. Seeing a counsellor can help you to cope with the stresses and strains that come with fertility problems and having fertility treatment.

If you have a regular cycle, you will have a test for your levels of the hormone progesterone seven days before your period is due. This checks that you are producing eggs (ovulating). Your blood will also be tested for the other hormones involved in getting pregnant.

You will have an ultrasound scan of your womb, fallopian tubes and ovaries. The best quality pictures are seen when the scanning probe is placed in the vagina (a transvaginal ultrasound). Your specialist may also suggest you have a laparoscopy, which is a keyhole operation to look directly at your ovaries and fallopian tubes. An alternative to a laparoscopy to check your fallopian tubes is a test called a hysterosalpingogram (HSG). This is a test where your doctor will inject a dye through your cervix while you have an X-ray. If your fallopian tubes are open, the dye can be seen to flow through them. HSG is an outpatient test, which means that you won't need to stay overnight in hospital.

For Men You will need to take a sample of your semen to the clinic for testing. This will look at the numbers of sperm, how they move and whether they have a normal structure.

Treatment The treatment that is best for you will depend on the cause of subfertility.

Helping you to ovulate If all or part of the subfertility is to do with not ovulating (eg if you have polycystic ovary syndrome), treatments can stimulate your inactive ovaries to produce eggs. This is called ovulation induction. At its simplest, this involves taking a medicine called clomiphene (eg Clomid) or tamoxifen for six days each month. Your doctor may also prescribe a medicine called metformin if you have polycystic ovary syndrome and clomiphene wasn't effective on its own.

Controlling ovulation and collecting eggs A more complex form of ovulation induction is used if you are preparing for the fertility treatments called in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). The aim is to control the timing of your monthly cycle accurately so that your eggs can be removed and fertilised on a specific day. A normal monthly cycle will produce only one egg, but with this method, which uses three hormones given at different times, you produce several ripe eggs at once. This is called superovulation and it increases your chances of a pregnancy.

Usually, the eggs are collected while you have an ultrasound scan. A thin needle is passed through your vagina and into your ovary. This is done as an outpatient procedure, so you won't need to stay overnight in hospital and you usually won't need a general anaesthetic.

Assisted conception There are many different technologies that can help you to conceive. All of these aim to bring the sperm and an egg, or eggs, close together. The three main methods are as follows.

Intra-uterine insemination (IUI for short) Sperm that have been washed and specially prepared are put inside your womb just before ovulation is due. This is usually the first method offered to couples who have unexplained infertility. It's also useful if there are ejaculation problems or mild problems with the quality of the sperm. IUI can be combined with ovulation induction (see Helping you to ovulate).

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) IVF can be carried out with donor sperm or donor eggs. The sperm and embryos can also be frozen for future use, although there are strict legal rules, supervised by the HFEA, to regulate these procedures. You will need to discuss these methods with your specialist.

In the UK, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) licenses clinics offering advanced fertility treatments such as IVF.

Eggs and sperm are mixed in a test tube in a laboratory - this is where the phrase "test-tube baby" comes from. Successful fertilisation can be seen with a microscope after about 12 to 20 hours. One or two embryos are transferred into your womb using a soft plastic tube passed through your vagina. IVF is useful if your fallopian tubes are damaged or have been removed. It can also work well if your subfertility is caused by endometriosis (for women) and for mild sperm problems (for men).

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) A single sperm is injected into an egg in the laboratory and the resulting embryo is transferred to the womb, as with IVF. The cytoplasm is just the scientific name for the insides of the egg cell. This type of fertility treatment is used when there are more serious problems with the sperm or when problems between the egg and sperm are preventing fertilisation.

Complications Complications are when problems occur during or after the treatment.

Ovulation induction increases the chances of having a multiple pregnancy (such as twins). This raises the risk of problems for the mother and baby.

Ovulation induction can also produce a rare condition called ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, in which the ovary is overstimulated and produces too much of the hormone oestrogen. As a result, the woman is at an increased risk of getting blood clots and chest problems, and may need to go into hospital for monitoring and treatment.

Pregnancies that result from IVF can still be ectopic (the embryo starts to develop outside the womb, usually in a fallopian tube). Also, any technique that involves putting instruments into your body can cause infection or damage to internal organs.

Success rates The success of assisted conception is very variable and depends on the reason for subfertility and, for women, your age. The success rate goes down sharply over the age of 40. If you are having IVF or ICSI, your clinic should tell you its live birth rate - the so-called "take home baby" rate. Each year the figures for the UK are published by the HFEA (see Further information).

Acne During Pregnancy - How to treat acne in pregnancy

Acne During Pregnancy - How to treat acne in pregnancy

    By: Ricky Hussey

Acne in pregnancy is very common, whether you have previously had acne or not. If you are planning to get pregnant, it is important to discuss your acne treatments with your doctor. Many of these can harm the unborn baby. Women have complained of acne appearing mainly on the face, chest and back areas. Occurrence can be different in every woman, and while some will have moderate to severe outbreaks others will not be conflicted with acne during pregnancy at all. As with pregnancy itself, each case is different. Women that are affected during a first pregnancy may not have acne during subsequent pregnancies, or vice versa.

You might feel very much scared of the thought of those odds of acne scar formation which is quite obvious on your part. But, as a matter of fact it is quite common to have acne in pregnancy and you can really beat it with the help of a proper treatment regimen. It has been estimated that almost 50% of adult women experience acne flare ups during premenstrual period and pregnancy and there is nothing abnormal about it. During pregnancy the serum level of male hormones, androgens, goes on top giving rise to a sudden hormonal imbalance in female body. This erratic upsurge of male hormones influences the oil glands underneath epidermal skin layer to secrete huge amount of body oil or sebum. Surplus sebum, instead of reaching the skin surface, clogs up the hair follicles intermingling with follicular lining dead cells and acne causing Propionibacterium acnes bacteria. This eventually leads to several types of acne lesions and inflammation not only on your face but also on several parts of your body.

    Pregnancy Skin Care Tips

Fortunately there are steps you can take to keep your skin in tiptop shape even with acne during pregnancy. While you may not avoid acne during pregnancy, you can do your best to maintain a healthy pregnancy glow. Here are some tips for maintaining your best appearance during pregnancy.

    1. Always get plenty of sleep. Getting enough sleep will allow you to look refreshed and will help keep your skin healthy and less wrinkle prone. 2. Use sunscreen religiously. Even if you don't suffer from melasma, your skin is more sensitive during pregnancy. You should always use a moisturizer or sun block with an SPF 15 or higher. 3. Clean your face and neck regularly. Pimples will be much worse if pores are clogged. Be sure to clean your face using a gentle cleanser and light moisturizer during pregnancy.

Just by maintaining a few simple rules in your everyday life and following some treatment procedures as per the direction of your doctor you could get rid of this skin disease completely. Do not over cleanse your skin or rub with a harsh scrubber in an attempt to wipe off your acne pimples as early as possible, which otherwise could backfire your overall endeavor, adding more acne lesions to your face. Over cleansing would strip away the surplus oil from your skin which would lead to more irritation and breakouts. A few medicines which you might be able to use for acne in pregnancy without putting your fetus in risk for major malformations are benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid, and erythromycin.

    Acne treatment during Pregnancy

    * Retin-A is a cream which is applied on the affected area to reduce acne. It is also known as Tretinoin. * Use an astringent that is non-medicated.

How to Deal With a Genital Warts Infection During Pregnancy

How to Deal With a Genital Warts Infection During Pregnancy

    By: Muna Wa Wanjiru

If you’re pregnant and have genital warts you should really talk with your doctor for the best possible medical advice. Some medications won’t be suitable for use while you’re pregnant, and alternatives should be discussed. Genital warts can also become aggravated during pregnancy, and in some cases can cause problems during childbirth. There is also a chance for vaginal bleeding to occur as well due to these warts.

Additionally, you should also be aware that if you have genital warts, there’s a chance that during childbirth, the genital HPV infection might be passed on to your newborn baby. In some cases this won’t amount to anything, but in a few rare cases the baby might develop this strain of warts in the throat area. This is called laryngeal pappiloma.

The genital warts infection won’t necessarily show up immediately and can manifest itself as much as three years on from time of infection. Treatment is available to help cure the genital warts and to relieve any discomfort your baby might suffer, but the treatment might need to be frequent

Genital warts can appear during pregnancy if you are already infected. Warts can become larger and increase with pregnancy. Vaginal bleeding may occur. If the genital warts are in the vagina, cervix or vulva you might find that a normal delivery is difficult. However, cesarean delivers aren’t necessarily recommend for pregnant women who have genital warts. Genital warts in the birth canal can also lead to your newborn baby becoming infected with HPV.

In these cases, which are very rare, the warts will tend to develop in and around the throat area. Treatment will need to be sought to clear these. The presence of genital warts in the vagina or in and around the urethra can make urinating difficult, especially as the warts may tend to increase in size.

5 Parenting Trends That Affect How We Communicate About Childcare

5 Parenting Trends That Affect How We Communicate About Childcare

    By: Aruni Gunasegaram

In the "old days" a mom would get advice and tips through the network of family members and friends who more likely than not were in the same town or village and within a short distance from her. With families and friends being spread across the country and the world, moms are now using the Internet to bring back aspects of that network. As moms rely on the Internet for information, they are also looking to the Internet for ways to share and manage their busy lives. Here are some of the trends I see with regards to moms using the Internet when it comes to childcare.

    1. Since word-of-mouth from other moms is the greatest influencer on a mom’s purchasing decision, she is turning to Internet forums and baby-related sites such as BabyCenter and iVillage to ask questions, seek out answers, and look at product reviews.

    2. Many women who wait until they are older to have children are experiencing higher instances of multiple and premature births. They tend to be more concerned when having to make the decision to leave their baby in the hands of a nanny or other caregiver. They want to know what is happening to their baby and they want to know as quickly and easily as possible.

    3. Many moms are busier than ever and often don’t have time to think in between working and trying to get sleep so they seek out tools that will help them with baby care decisions. They have less time than in the past to deal with these problems and are therefore looking for quick and effective ways to get the information or advice they need to handle their unique situations.

    4. Many moms are returning back to work earlier but want to continue breastfeeding and want to know how their baby is doing during the day. They are hiring baby nurses and pumping at work. This means that keeping track of how much she pumped, when her baby ate, or how much her baby ate as well as who did what and when becomes critically important in order to ensure the proper nutrition and health of her baby.

    5. More and more moms are finding and hiring nannies over the Internet and nannies and nanny agencies are reaching out to moms via the Internet as well. Nannies are given access to and are using the Internet at their client’s home and are using it to do their jobs better, check their email, and communicate with their peers. Nannies and moms are also spending more and more time communicating by cell phone and email in order to schedule visits and coordinate other childcare activities.

Some changes take a long time and many seem to happen overnight. Since the beginning of humanity we have taken care of our children but the ways we take care of them has changed drastically with the introduction of diapers, formula, baby safety related items, and most recently the Internet. Who would have thought that over 36.6 million moms in the US will be regular Internet users in 2010? (source: eMarketer.com). The Internet enables her to do research so she can be a better-informed parent and a savvier consumer (51% of the moms surveyed say the Internet changed the way they get information about products and services) and allows her to network with other moms, as well.

The overall trend is clear: more and more moms are using the Internet to communicate with each other and to get the information they need to take care of their babies. Nannies and nanny agencies are participating as well and are using the Internet to reach out to moms and their employees. With families spreading out and moms finding it hard to get the one-on-one face time with baby, family, and friends, the Internet is stepping in. It is a tool that is helping make parenthood easier and bringing back some of the familial and social relationships that are so important in helping parents raise healthy children in a safe environment.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. The tools we use to aid in childcare are different now, but the goal of safety, health, and love are still the same. Are you ready to embrace the change? Paternity Testing on Absent Fathers

    Paternity Testing on Absent Fathers

    By: Kevin Camilleri

DNA testing is one of the most conclusive ways available to determine paternity of any given child. By taking a sample of DNA from both the alleged father and from the child in question, high-tech DNA profiling techniques are used to match reference points across genetic markers on both samples which can lead to an accurate determination of where a genetic relationship exists.

In an ideal world, paternity testing would have available both a sample from the child and from his alleged father in order to best establish the link between them. However, in some DNA paternity testing cases the father is not available to give his DNA sample, whether through choice, or unavailability for some other reason. However, where the father is absent, it is still possible to use other DNA tests to determine whether a relationship exists.

DNA Testing on Other Direct Relatives

By performing DNA testing with other members of the family that share some of the same genes with the alleged father, it is possible to determine whether or not there is a likelihood of paternity over the child in question. Obviously the father's sample is desired for reasons of accuracy and conclusivity, however it is more than possible (particularly with advancing testing technologies) to be able to determine paternity through shared genetic material through more distant relatives to the father. In other words, provided a relative of the alleged father is available for DNA testing, you should be able to obtain some results although this may not always be conclusive.

    DNA Testing on Grandparents

In the absence of the alleged father or any separate sample of his DNA, the alleged paternal grandparents can provide the key to establishing paternity. By taking a sample from either one or both the grandmother and grandfather of the baby, it is possible to determine even in the absence of the father whether or not there is shared genetic material and consequently whether or not there is a shared relationship, i.e. parentage.

    DNA Testing on Male Relatives

Y-STR testing is one of the most innovative DNA testing methods honed in recent years, tracking down the male-only Y- chromosome to establish genetic links between male children and elder vertical male relatives, for example grandfathers, great grandfathers, even great uncles by blood relationships. This can be particularly handy where the father is unavailable and direct elderly relatives have died, given that a great deal of genetic material passes unmutated from father to son throughout generations. Of course, this is however absolutely of no use for DNA testing of female children.

    DNA Testing on Siblings

Alternatively siblings can also provide a close genetic match, which makes it possible to test whether or not two children are related by the whole blood, rather than half. Where there is dispute over the potential father of a child, an alleged sibling's sample can be a good way to compare DNA to determine the extent of the relationship. The same can be said for brothers and sisters of the alleged father, who can also share some genetic material sufficient to provide a result in DNA testing of the child in question,

If your situation requires is such that you require to do the DNA testing through one of the alternatives above, it is always advisable to contact in advance the company who will be performing the DNA test and explain your case in full so that they can advise you on the DNA testing options available as well the results that can be obtained.

Kevin Camilleri writes articles for dna paternity test. Other articles written by the author related to paternity testing, home paternity test and paternity test kit can be found on the net.

    Aromatherapy for Pregnancy

    Aromatherapy for Pregnancy

    By: George Key

Aromatherapy involves using essential oils in their original form or in mixes, lotions, candles, etc., to help heal the body, relax and lift one’s mood. Essential oils come for plants and are excellent for helping to keep the body and mind balanced. Pregnant women may especially benefit from aromatherapy because they are going through great physical changes and may feel especially achy, stressed and vulnerable. Well, with the proper precautions taken, pregnant woman can still take advantage of all of the healthful and psychological benefits of aromatherapy. In this article, we will discuss three guidelines to enjoying aromatherapy while pregnant.

1.Dilute, Dilute, Dilute: Because essential oils are concentrated they will need to be diluted before they are used. For pregnant women, dilutions for essential oil blends should stand at 2%. This means that one should use 10 drops of oil in 2 TBS of carrier oil. For a bath, using 5-10 drops of essential oil should be safe.

2.Avoid These Essential Oils: There are certain essential oils that should be avoided while one is pregnant. During the first 3 months of pregnancy, essential oils should be completely eliminated. Afterwards, you may begin to use essential oils, just be sure to dilute them and to avoid certain ones all together. Some of those that you should avoid are lemongrass, parsley, peppermint, thype, basil, cinnamon, clary sage, cypress, jasmine, clove and myrhh. These oils have been chosen because they have certain properties that are believed to cause negative side effects in pregnant women. This includes cramping, blood thinning and contractions.

3.Oils That Are Great For Pregnant Women: On the other hand, there are some essential oils that are beneficial to pregnant women. They include chamomile, which has great anti-inflammatory properties and helps to ease muscular aches and other common pains. Eucalyptus is another essential oil that is recommended for pregnant ladies. It is also believed to reduce swelling and ease congestion. This might come in handy when you catch a cold or flu and aren’t able to take over-the-counter medications. Lavender is always a very popular essential oil. It is good for mild depression, helps one to relax, is soothing for common aches and pains associated with pregnancy. Grapefruit helps to stimulate the lymphatic system, helps the digestive tract and aids pregnant women in not retaining water. Neroli is excellent for keeping ones’ mood up, relax and also to keep the skin from getting dull because it aids in cell regeneration. Tangerine will help you avoid those stretch marks that are a common side effect of pregnancy. It also helps in keeping mommies to be cool and calm.

Aromatherapy can be a fantastic way for moms to relax and ease common pregnancy related stress, aches and pain. Because pregnancy requires that soon-to-be moms forgo many drugs, over-the-counter and prescription, good alternative treatments will be very important. Aromatherapy is an affordable and effective way to treat common ailments safely and enjoyably. This is even more valuable when women are pregnant and often not feeling their best.

    Other Types Of Pain Relief-Pregnancy

    Other Types Of Pain Relief-Pregnancy

    By: David Jones

Although many women over 35 end up having an epidural, there are multiple other options, and it's good to be informed about these and ask about them when you talk with your care provider. Types of pain relief range from complementary techniques like acupuncture to powerful narcotic drugs.

    Tens

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) works by passing a tiny electric current through the skin. This current is believed to block pain messages from reaching your brain. It may also stimulate your brain to produce natural pain inhibitors, called endorphins. Tens devices are about the size of a small radio and are connected to electrodes placed on the skin, usually on your lower back. Electrical impulses result in a tingling sensation, which some women find annoying. The side effects of tens are usually no more than some skin irritation where the pads are stuck to the back. The electrical impulses do not affect the baby. Most studies of tens in labor have found it to be only mildly effective in reducing labor pain.

    Acupuncture

Some women find acupuncture helpful in reducing labor pain. There are different theories as to how acupuncture works. In Western medicine, the hair fine needles placed in the skin are believed to stimulate larger nerve fibers, which then block nerve activity in the smaller fibers that transmit pain sensations. It may also release endorphins, the body's natural painkillers. There is conflicting evidence on just how effective acupuncture is in reducing labor pain. However, it does seem to reduce the chance that you will request epidural analgesia. If you feel strongly about avoiding an epidural, acupuncture may be helpful for you. However, you'll need to find a licensed practitioner who will be able to be with you during labor, and to check the regulations at your hospital.

    Hypnosis

There is some evidence that women who are susceptible to hypnosis may be able to reduce the sensation of pain through hypnosis. Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation and concentration and is something that you can learn to do yourself (in which case it is called autohypnosis). While hypnosis is not harmful. it is expensive and only effective in women who are most susceptible to hypnosis. It may also only have mild effects on labor pain. If you want to try hypnosis, you should start inquiring about classes early in pregnancy.

    Subcutaneous Water Injections

In this technique a small amount of sterile water is injected under the skin in two to four spots in the lower back. The procedure seems to be helpful for women who experience labor pain in their backs, especially if it is given in the early stages of labor. In two studies, treatments were found to provide a small to moderate reduction in pain intensity for up to 45 minutes after the injections. This therapy is safe and can be given by your care provider and may provide some pain relief in early labor. However, there is no evidence so far that water injections decrease the use of epidural analgesia.

    Narcotic Analgesia

Narcotic medications, such as morphine and nalbuphine, can be used in labor. They are given either as a shot or intravenously. Narcotics slightly take the edge off the pain, but do not completely relieve it. They have the disadvantage of often causing drowsiness and nausea. Narcotics are most likely to be given in the active stage of labor. Most women can tolerate pain better when they are pushing because they can be active, and are less likely to need narcotics. You also want to be at your most energetic and alert during this stage so that you can push effectively. Some women use narcotics only for labor pain, while others use this type of analgesia as a way to handle pain until they request epidural analgesia (which is frequently delayed until you are more than 4cm dilated). Narcotics affect your level of alertness, and this will take a while to wear off.

    Choice Of Medication

Most narcotic drugs are equally effective and have similar side effects. However, there are some that are possibly worse than others for the baby. Make sure you understand what medications you are being given during labor. One particular narcotic drug, meperidine should be avoided. In the body, this drug is converted to a substance called normeperidine, which can stay in your baby's system for days and affect his or her ability to interact with others. Safer alternatives are nalbuphine and morphine, both of which are more quickly cleared from the baby's system. However they may still make your baby drowsy and affect the baby's heart rate patterns.

Since one of the side effects of narcotics is nausea, many care providers will automatically give you a sedative drug called promethazine together with your dose of narcotic. Although experiencing nausea is unpleasant, you may want to ask your care provider not to give you promethazine unless you develop nausea, since it will make you very drowsy with out easing pain.

    Spinal Block

Spinal analgesia is often used to block pain during a cesarean delivery. Similar to an epidural, it will usually numb you to pain and light touch from the top of your belly down. It is unlike epidural analgesia in that a needle is placed in to the spinal fluid (rather than outside the spinal sac) and a small amount of local anesthetic is injected in to the fluid. Leaking of spinal fluid occurs with about 1 percent of spinals and can result in a bad headache. Spinal analgesia lasts only 1-2 hours and can't usually be readministered.

    Pudendal Anesthesia

If you don't have an epidural or if your epidural is not working well (a rare occurrence), your care provider may need to numb your pelvic area for a forceps delivery or to repair a tear. A pudendal block numbs sensation in the pudendal nerve, which supplies feeling to the genitals and inner thigh. To place a pudendal block, your care provider will place his or her fingers inside your vagina to help guide the injection. A small amount of local anesthetic is injected beneath the vaginal wall.

This test screens for anemia, which is very common during pregnancy. Anemia may be due to low iron levels, or can be an inherited form, such as thalassemia.

    Blood type

This test will determine your blood type

as well as show if you are Rhesus positive (Rh+) or negative (Rh-). If you are Rh- you will usually receive a medication called rhogam after medical procedures such as amniocentesis, or if you have vaginal bleeding. You will usually get an extra dose at around 28 weeks.

    Antibody screen

This test determines whether you have antibodies that could cross the placenta and cause the baby to become anemic.

    Hepatitis B

This test will identify women who are actively infectious with hepatitis B, a viral liver disease that can be transmitted to the baby during pregnancy and labor.

    HIV

This test will identify women who have been infected with the HIV retrovirus.

    Rubella

This blood test determines whether you are immune to rubella. If you are not, you will usually get vaccinated right after delivery. You cannot have the vaccine during pregnancy.

    Syphilis

Syphilis does not always cause symptoms but can cause serious problems for the fetus.

    Urine test

This test looks for extra sugar or protein in your urine, and for signs of a urinary tract infection (UTI). Extra protein can be a sign of kidney disease extra sugar may indicate diabetes. UTls will be treated with antibiotics to prevent a serious kidney infection, which can cause pregnancy complications.

    Cervical smear

Unless you have had one recently, you may have a cervical smear (PAP smear).

    Blood pressure

Blood pressure usually falls at the beginning of pregnancy. Women with high blood pressure or blood pressure at the high end of normal early in pregnancy are at increased risk of having blood pressure problems later.

    Weight

This baseline value will let your care provider calculate how much weight you have gained as your pregnancy progresses, and guide how much weight you need to gain during the pregnancy.

If your are uncertain as to whether you have had chicken pox, a blood test will let you know whether you should stay away from people with this infectious disease while you are pregnant. If you are not immune, and do happen to be exposed, there is treatment to prevent severe chicken pox during pregnancy. If you are African American, Hispanic, or of mediterranean , descent you will have tests for blood disorders such as sickle cell anemia or thalassemia, which are more common in these groups.

Last but not least, you will be given your due date at this appointment (some times called the EDC - estimated date of confinement). Your due date is based on your last menstrual period. Even if you think you know the date you conceived, your last menstrual period is usually the most accurate way to estimate your due date. The exception occurs when you don't remember when your last period was or if you have very irregular periods. In this case, an early ultrasound will be the most accurate way to date your pregnancy. Don't get too attached to your due date remember, it is only an estimate.

Usually your care provider will see you again in 4-6 weeks to review your test results and discuss first trimester screening results. However, your doctor should call you before your second visit if any of the results are abnormal.

Tubal Sterilization Reversal- Is it Possible to Get Pregnant Again?

Tubal Sterilization Reversal- Is it Possible to Get Pregnant Again?

    By: Suwarti Sukirman

Tubal Ligation is a medical procedure with the help of which a woman gets the fallopian tubes tied and thus restricts prospects of getting pregnant. But almost around 25 percent of women, who had got sterilization method done, regret their decision later on and go for Tubal Sterilization Reversal. Tubal reversal surgery is a major one and the procedure normally takes around two to three hours at the least. This procedure is done with the help of general anesthesia. The main function of doctors here is to make functional the fallopian tubes which had been cut, tied or blocked by some device. This surgery requires you to stay at hospital for least at least a period of three to five days. Recovery period is not long. The patient can get back to normal daily activities with in around two to three weeks of the operation. All major surgeries have some kind of complications associated with them. The same is true for tubal reversal surgery also. Although the side effects are minimal, some women may face minor problems such as bleeding or infections due to anesthesia, or damage to the surrounding organs after the surgery. But now with major developments in microsurgery this operation can be performed in much lesser time. It takes only around one hour now. Nowadays only one local anesthesia is used. This development in microsurgery had made this operation far less invasive than the traditional tubal reversal surgery. Thus complications and side effects of surgery are also reduced to a greater extent nowadays. Not every woman who had done tubal ligation can get it reversed. There are many factors that need to be considered. First the doctor will examine the condition of your fallopian tubes. He will look at surgery and pathology reports from where the woman had got done her tubal sterilization. The doctor looks at how the surgery was done, whether it was cut, tied, or blocked non-surgically. The health of the fallopian tubes, the amount of fallopian tubes that is left after sterilization are some of the important factors which would be considered before the reversal procedure. Finally the doctor also looks at your age. Only after analyzing all these factors, a doctor would make his decision to take next step. Various factors such as the procedure used for reversal, age of the woman and many more would decide how much prospects for pregnancy are left. Women who are younger than 40 years and had done sterilization by the traditional method of Tubal Ligation have around 80 to 85 percent chances of getting pregnant again. They get pregnancy within the first year itself. While, women who had done Tubal sterilization through microsurgery have a slightly higher chances of getting pregnant. So, several factors would decide the success rate of tubal sterilization reversal procedure.

False Labor Pains – Illusion Of Labor

False Labor Pains – Illusion Of Labor

    By: Apurva Shree

False labor pains and contractions give illusion to the pregnant women that the effort has begun. Sometimes it becomes difficult to understand whether you are having true or false labor pains. Further, it can be well determined through vaginal exam. There can be contractions when you walk, sleep or drink more than 32 ounces of water. But this does not mean that your period is near.

These pains are also known as Braxton Hicks labor pains. Yes, they are not the true labor pains. The women may start experiencing these contractions at her second or third trimester of pregnancy. Some symptoms might make you think that you are in effort stage but it isn’t so. Another fact is that your cervix dilation is not effected at all and the contractions don’t grow consistently stronger, longer or closer.

Natural ache in pregnancy evolves gradually. It might be difficult for you to understand whether it is actual or just a pre labor. Symptoms of labor pain in pregnancy are:

  • Backaches
  • Soft bowel movements
  • Nesting Instinct which is the effect of hormones which makes you feel boosted up with lots of energy. So do not try to do much of the activities.
  • Pressure in women pelvis as when the cervix softens, the baby starts dropping until his head is completely reached to the cervix.
  • The cervix begins softening, thinning and opening few days before the date.
  • With the softening of the cervix the women experiences vaginal discharge which is the loss of mucus plug which is also referred as "bloody show".
  • Contractions are another important sign of labor.

This stage of every woman’s is different. There are some which starts slowly and gradually speeds up and some begin rapidly and then slows down. False effort contractions are unpredictable and appear at irregular intervals but if it is a real labor then the contractions will be regular and for short intervals. So record the contractions, when it occurred for the first time and then when the next occurred. This way you can know whether it is a true or the fake pain.

Deciding whether the it is actual one or a fake is easy because false contraction diminish of their own. It also reduces with doing or stopping of an activity or position with which it started. On the other hand true pain will not reduce but will keep increasing. Keep a watch at your body changes and do not hesitate in calling the doctor to confirm whether its true labor or fake labor pains.
  • False labor pains are short and irregular pains which disappear with time. False labor does not bring any changes in the cervix of the pregnant women and last for not more than 24-36 hours. Get more information by clicking on pregnancy.

    Back pain and pregnancy

    Back pain and pregnancy

    By: Derek Semp

For many women, back pain and pregnancy go hand in hand and not surprisingly, there are a number of physical reasons why it occurs. This article will look at some of them.

    1. Hormones. During pregnancy, hormones can soften ligaments causing more movement in the joints than usual and in some cases, the ligaments are stretched or strained.

    2. Uterus. The growing fetus in the uterus can cause changes in posture which result in lower back pain. As the entire area enlarges, pressure is put on the spine and vertebra.

    3. Position of fetus. Especially in the later stages of development, the position of the fetus can compress nerves in the spinal column, causing back pain.

Once you have determined which of the physical reasons is causing your back pain, there are some steps you can take to lessen the pain and in some cases eliminate the problem. The most important thing to remember is that the body changes during pregnancy and that some simple strategies can go a long way to keeping those changes in check.

The biggest factor for back pain and pregnancy is posture. Slouching should be avoided at all times, and when sitting, a pillow or rolled up towel can be used to cushion the lower back. This goes for lounge chairs as well as rigid chairs. Other strategies to keep a correct posture include keeping the shoulders back, chin upwards, head centered over shoulders and using abdominal muscles to maintain a flat, not arched back. Knees lightly bent and the avoidance of uncomfortable footwear such as high heels are also helpful.

A simple strategy to avoid back pain after suddenly sitting after a period lying down is to roll onto one side, then use the arms to push into an upright position.

As mentioned above, abdominal muscles are important to prevent arching of the back, and the best way to strengthen them is through exercise. Your experienced Doctor or midwife will be able to provide exercises specially designed for pregnant women. Walking for 20-30 minutes each day can also be very helpful.

The need increasing as the pregnancy progresses, rest is also an important factor. When sleeping, lying on the side is advised with a pillow between the knees. An extra pillow under the growing tummy will also take a lot of pressure of the spinal column.

Most of the discomfort women feel in the later stages of pregnancy can be attributed to back pain, so paying close attention to avoiding it is paramount. Proper lifting technique should be observed no matter how heavy the object, that is the legs should be bent at the knee and the back kept straight at all times. At no stage should you bend over with straight legs. If there is another child, picking up your child should also be treated carefully.

Finally, domestic work should be kept to a minimum, especially vacuuming. An extension may be required to prevent the back from being bent and a good tip for hanging clothes is to place the basket on a table or chair, so the need to constant bend down is removed. When carrying bags of shopping, the load should be evenly balanced, i.e one light bag in each hand. For any more than that, assistance should be sought.

As you can see there are a number of factors that contribute to back pain and pregnancy. By paying close attention to your physiology and keeping a straight back at all times, much of the pain can be alleviated or avoided in the first place.

Does Your Plate Contain Foods To Avoid During Pregnancy?

Does Your Plate Contain Foods To Avoid During Pregnancy?

    By: Apurva Shree

Do you know which foods to avoid during pregnancy period? If not, then you had better read on. Even if you do know, read on to add to your knowledge regarding the best pregnancy diet.

    Raw Meats And Liver

It’s time to avoid raw meats like seafood, sushi, beef, poultry, and others. They pose a risk of toxoplasmosis, salmonella, and E.coli bacteria. Deli meats, which include hot dogs, have resulted in a type of food poisoning, known as Listeriosis, on a large scale. This is specifically detrimental to fetuses. Although the risk is less in deli meats, which to-be-mom would want to risk the life of her unborn baby?

Animal livers are also avoided due to the high amount of vitamin A that they contain. Excess of this vitamin might cause birth defects in your baby. So, it’s advisable to remove liver from your pregnancy diet plan completely.

    Fish

Fish containing high amounts of mercury or PCBs (Poly Chlorinated Biphenyls) is sold in many parts of America. Mercury in large amounts might lead to brain damage of your baby or cause delay in the learning processes in your child after birth. In addition to this, it might also lead to reduction in IQ, memory, and concentration in kids.

    Soft Cheese

Blue cheese, cambert, feta, soft white cheese, and blue veined cheese are examples of soft cheese. They have higher chances of being contaminated with Listeria bacteria, which might lead to severe illness in either you or your baby.

    Artificial Sweeteners

The two most commonly consumed artificial sweeteners are aspartame and saccharin. Although there is no proof of harmful effects of aspartame, saccharin is found to cause birth defects as well as cancer in rats. These sweeteners are generally present in diet sodas, cokes, and other soft drinks. Therefore, it’s best to avoid them. Instead, have milk, fruit juices, and water.

Certain studies have also shown raw sprouts to contain salmonella bacteria. If you want to be on the safer side, stay away from raw sprouts; even better, avoid cooked ones too.

Besides knowing about which food to avoid, you should also be aware of post-pregnancy diet, especially if you choose to breastfeed. This is because whatever you eat and drink passes into your milk, which in turn, passes to your baby.

Read articles and books online and otherwise to increase your knowledge about foods to avoid during pregnancy.

Many women are unaware of foods to avoid during pregnancy even though they have a pregnancy diet plan. Even post pregnancy diet needs attention.
